The 18th hole of La Torretta Lake Resort & Spa’s championship golf course begins with a blind tee shot. Players have to shoot over an imposing hill, aiming to land within the narrow confines of a pine-tree-lined fairway. The approach shot is even tougher: the hole’s elevated green is protected by a large bunker and an expansive lake.
La Torretta caters to guests of all ages with a wealth of family-friendly activities and amenities, including an onsite water park. Here you'll find five expansive pools, an in-water playground, and a lazy river. Teens can hang out in The Edge, a lounge equipped with a Wii and remote-control cars, or they can practice horseless polo on the mini-golf course. The 21,000-acre lake extends into Huntsville State Park, which itself connects with Sam Houston National Forest. For a rugged day trip, enter Sam Houston and hop onto the Lone Star Hiking Trail, a 128-mile stretch winding through the forest. Keep an eye out for deer, ducks, and the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. The rare bird’s distinctive squeaky call can be heard from a considerable distance.
